Option 1: Hand-Drawn Tree
Materials: Large paper or poster board, crayons, markers, colored pencils, family photos (optional)
Instructions:
-Draw a large tree trunk in the center of the paper. Add branches reaching out.
-At the top, write “My Family Tree!”
Starting at the bottom, draw a circle or square for the child. Write their name inside.
Moving up, add circles/squares for parents, writing their names. Connect them with lines to the child’s circle.
Continue adding grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins. Help the child understand how everyone is related.
Optional: Glue photos into the shapes or have the child draw pictures of family members.
Option 2: My Family Booklet
Materials: Several sheets of paper, stapler or hole punch and yarn, crayons/markers
Instructions:
-Fold the paper in half to make a booklet. Staple along the fold or punch holes and tie with yarn.
-On each page, dedicate it to a family member.
Page 1: “All About Me!” The child writes their name, draws a self-portrait
Page 2: “My Mom/Dad” Draw a picture and write some favorite things about them
Page 3: “My Grandma/Grandpa” and so on.
-Encourage the child to ask family members for help filling out the booklet.
Option 3: Online Tools (With Adult Supervision)
Free websites like Canva.com have templates you can customize. Search for “family tree” to find one you like.
Family Tree Builder websites: Many offer free basic accounts that let you start building a digital tree.
Tips for Making it Fun:
